This project is all about the exploration of layering of different materials. I wanted to dig deeper into physically layering materials as if I would be on Photoshop or Illustrator. I also wanted to use materials that I have never used before. I usually go for a softer side of design versus the harsh raw materials I used in this project. I was able to achieve the layering effect by using plexiglas sitting on top of the sheet metal. You will see my process of how I accomplished this project.

This was the hardest part of the whole project. I tried cutting all the lines at first but I quickly learned that was not going to work. The line kept pulling up while I was trying to cut the shelf liner. I did not want to make any mistakes at this point because I would have to start over. On one of the stencils, I made the wrong cut and had to hold on to the piece of paper to see if I could reattach it later.

I did this process three other times. I had to create four stencils so I could spray paint the grid of Chicago. I learned real quick that I needed to do the horizontal, vertical, curved, and diagonal lines separately. I had many setbacks with this process but in the end it turned out to work. I used a shelf liner for the stencil and spray paint to get the color on the sheet metal.

This is the final look for the sheet metal screwed into the plywood. I also attached standoffs to that as well to hold the plexiglass to it. This was a tough and time consuming part of the project. You did not want to go too hard into the plexiglass because it would crack. After it cracks, there is no going back from there. I think this was the hardest part of the whole project. I was so anxious the whole time I was drilling.
